A DEB based analysis of growth and toxin elimination processes in mussels (Mytilus edulis) exposed to Diarrhetic Shellfish Toxins (DST) ArchiMer
Rosland, Rune; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Duinker, Arne; Strand, Oivind; Strohmeier, Tore.
A Dynamic Energy Budget(DEB) model was used to analyse growth and toxin elimination processes in musselsthat had been exposed to Diarrhetic Shellfish Toxins (DST). After DST exposure mussels were placed inan experimentalin-situ setup, expected to have low concentrations of toxic phytoplankton, and DST concentrations in mussel tissueswere regularly monitored along with temperature and seston concentration and composition in the water. A one-compartment model for DST concentrations and elimination rate was integrated with the DEB model, assuming that storage and structural compartments absorb DST. The model was used to simulate growth and toxin elimination rates from mussel tissues. Toxin elimination rate was obtained by a calibration between observed and...

An ecosystem-based approach and management framework for the integrated evaluation of bivalve aquaculture impacts ArchiMer
Cranford, Peter J.; Kamermans, Pauline; Krause, Gesche; Mazurie, Joseph; Buck, Bela H.; Dolmer, Per; Fraser, David; Van Nieuwenhove, Kris; O'Beirn, Francis X.; Sanchez-mata, Adoracion; Thorarinsdottir, Gudrun G.; Strand, Oivind.
An ecosystem-based approach to bivalve aquaculture management is a strategy for the integration of aquaculture within the wider ecosystem, including human aspects, in such a way that it promotes sustainable development, equity, and resilience of ecosystems. Given the linkage between social and ecological systems, marine regulators require an ecosystem-based decision framework that structures and integrates the relationships between these systems and facilitates communication of aquaculture-environment interactions and policy-related developments and decisions. The Drivers-Pressures-State Change-Impact-Response (DPSIR) management framework incorporates the connectivity between human and ecological issues and would permit available performance indicators to...

Attraction and repulsion of mobile wild organisms to finfish and shellfish aquaculture: a review ArchiMer
Callier, Myriam; Byron, Carrie J.; Bengtson, David A.; Cranford, Peter J.; Cross, Stephen F.; Focken, Ulfert; Jansen, Henrice M.; Kamermans, Pauline; Kiessling, Anders; Landry, Thomas; O'Beirn, Francis; Petersson, Erik; Rheault, Robert B.; Strand, Oivind; Sundell, Kristina; Svasand, Terje; Wikfors, Gary H.; Mckindsey, Christopher W..
Knowledge of aquaculture–environment interactions is essential for the development of a sustainable aquaculture industry and efficient marine spatial planning. The effects of fish and shellfish farming on sessile wild populations, particularly infauna, have been studied intensively. Mobile fauna, including crustaceans, fish, birds and marine mammals, also interact with aquaculture operations, but the interactions are more complex and these animals may be attracted to (attraction) or show an aversion to (repulsion) farm operations with various degrees of effects. This review outlines the main mechanisms and effects of attraction and repulsion of wild animals to/from marine finfish cage and bivalve aquaculture, with a focus on effects on fisheries-related...

Feeding and energetics of the great scallop, Pecten maximus, through a DEB model ArchiMer
Lavaud, Romain; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Jean, Fred; Emmery, Antoine; Strand, Oivind; Kooijman, Sebastiaan A. L. M..
We developed a full life-cycle bioenergetic model for the great scallop P. maximusrelying on the concepts of the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory. The covariation method was implemented to estimate the parameters of a standard DEB model. Such models are able to predict various metabolic processes from a food availability marker and temperature in the environment. However, suspension-feeders are likely to feed on various trophic sources, from microalgae cells to detritus. They are also able to sort and select food particles very efficiently, depending on their size, energetic value or quality. The present model includes a mechanistic description of the feeding processes, based on Kooijman’s Synthesizing Unit principle which allow to deal with several food...

Genetic structure of a commercially exploited bivalve, the great scallop Pecten maximus, along the European coasts ArchiMer
Morvezen, Romain; Charrier, Gregory; Boudry, Pierre; Chauvaud, Laurent; Breton, Florian; Strand, Oivind; Laroche, Jean.
The great scallop Pecten maximus is harvested in several European countries and fisheries targeting this species are severely regulated by fishing quotas. In addition, hatchery-based population enhancement has been developed in some countries to provide alternative or complementary production. The genetic structure of wild populations of P. maximus and the potential impact of aquaculture on the genetic diversity of this species remains poorly documented. In this study, we explored the genetic structure of P. maximus using 12 microsatellite markers, considering 14 populations sampled from Galicia (Spain) to the North of Norway, and one population of Pecten jacobaeus (L., 1758) from the Lion Gulf (Mediterranean Sea). Results indicated a clear differentiation...

Impacts of ocean acidification and warming stress on juvenile growth and metabolism in two populations of Pecten maximus ArchiMer
Harney, Ewan; Rastrick, Samuel; Artigaud, Sébastien; Pisapia, Julia; Miner, Philippe; Pichereau, Vianney; Strand, Oivind; Boudry, Pierre; Charrier, Gregory.
Elevated atmospheric CO2 is a major driver of global change in the ocean, causing sea surface temperatures to rise and acidification of marine environments. Together these stressors may have additive, synergistic or unforeseen consequences for many marine organisms, particularly during early life stages. The economically important King Scallop (Pecten maximus) is found along a large latitudinal gradient in the Eastern Atlantic, but it is unclear how this species will respond to changing environmental conditions. Studies of genetic structure suggest that Atlantic populations (from Spain to the UK) are genetically distinct from Norwegian populations, a result that is borne out by phenotypic differences. Yet whether genetic differences arise as a result of...

Modelling growth variability in longline mussel farms as a function of stocking density and farm design ArchiMer
Rosland, Rune; Bacher, Cedric; Strand, Oivind; Aure, Jan; Strohmeier, Tore.
Mussels (Mytilus edulis) are commonly cultivated on artificial structures like rafts, poles or longlines to facilitate farming operations. Farm structures and dense mussel populations may result in water flow reduction and seston depletion and thus reduced individual mussel growth and spatial growth variability inside a farm. One of the challenges in mussel farming is thus to scale and configure farms in order to optimise total mussel production and individual mussel quality under different environmental regimes. Here we present a spatially resolved model for simulation of flow reduction, seston depletion and individual mussel growth inside a longline farm based on information about farm configuration (spacing between longlines, farm length and stocking...

New insights into the seasonal feeding ecology of Pecten maximus using pigments, fatty acids and sterols analyses ArchiMer
Lavaud, Romain; Artigaud, Sebastien; Le Grand, Fabienne; Donval, Anne; Soudant, Philippe; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Strohmeier, Tore; Strand, Oivind; Leynaert, Aude; Beker, Beatriz; Chatterjee, Arnab; Jean, Fred.
We combined the use of pigments, fatty acids and sterols as biomarkers of the seasonal variation in food sources of the great scallop Pecten maximus. From March to October 2011, on a biweekly to twice-weekly basis, scallops and seawater from the water column and the water-sediment interface were collected in the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France). Pigment compositions in the seawater and in the stomach and rectum content of the scallops were analyzed by HPLC. Fatty acids and sterols from digestive gland (DG) tissue were analyzed by gas chromatography. Potential relationships between the temporal proportion of each marker in the environment and in the digestive tract were tested using multivariate analysis. Proportions of diatoms and Dinophyceae biomarkers...

Progressing aquaculture through virtual technology and decision-support tools for novel management ArchiMer
Ferreira, Joao Gomez; Aguilar-manjarrez, José; Bacher, Cedric; Black, Kenny; Dong, S.l.; Grant, Jon; Hofmann, Eileen E.; Kapetsky, Jim; Leung, P.s.; Pastres, Roberto; Strand, Oivind; Zhu, C.b..
Attention is presently turning to the processes, methods and tools that allow the principles of the ecosystem approach to aquaculture to be translated into practical implementation. An essential element for this is the use of virtual technology and decision-support tools, particularly if developing nations are to implement the key elements of aquaculture sustainability. We provide an overview of current and emerging issues and trends related to this topic over the past decade, an assessment of progress with regard to the expectations and commitments expressed in the Bangkok Declaration and conclude with some thoughts for the future.

Response of Mytilus edulis to enhanced phytoplankton availability by controlled upwelling in an oligotrophic fjord ArchiMer
Strohmeier, Tore; Strand, Oivind; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Duinker, Arne; Rosland, Rune; Aure, Jan; Erga, Svein R.; Naustvoll, Lars J.; Jansen, Henrice M.; Cranford, Peter J..
The controlled upwelling of nutrient-rich deep water in oligotrophic coastal regions has been proposed as a means of increasing phytoplankton and, subsequently, bivalve aquaculture production. This was tested as part of a large-scale upwelling experiment in an oligotrophic environment (Lysefjord, Norway). The mean chlorophyll a concentration in the upwelling area was consistently higher than at the control site (mean ± SD: 3.3 ± 1.9 and 1.5 ± 0.6 mg Chl a m-3, respectively) during the 4 mo of controlled upwelling. After 2 mo with upwelling, the dry flesh weight of 1 yr-old and 2 yr-old mussels was 95% and 24% higher, respectively, than that of the mussels at the control site. The 1 yr-old mussels at the upwelling site achieved up to 2.4-fold higher dry...

Spatial, Ecological and Social Dimensions of Assessments for Bivalve Farming Management ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Gangnery, Aline; Cugier, Philippe; Mongruel, Remi; Strand, Oivind; Frangoudes, Katia.
The general purpose of assessment is to provide decision-makers with the best valuable data, information, and predictions with which management decisions will be supported. Using case studies taken from four scientific projects and dealing with the management of marine bivalve resources, lessons learned allowed identifying some issues regarding assessment approaches. The selected projects also introduced methodological or institutional frameworks: ecosystem approach to aquaculture (EAA), system approach framework (SAF), marine spatial planning (MSP), and valuation of ecosystem services (ES). The study on ecosystem services linked ES to marine habitats and identified ES availability and vulnerability to pressures. The results were displayed as maps of...

Une application dynamique sous système d'information géographique pour la planification spatiale des activités aquacoles en Normandie ArchiMer
Gangnery, Aline; Le Gendre, Romain; Picoche, Coralie; Petton, Sebastien; Bacher, Cedric; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; You, Junyong; Hageberg, Anne; Strand, Oivind.

Variability in particle retention efficiency by the mussel Mytilus edulis ArchiMer
Strohmeier, Tore; Strand, Oivind; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Duinker, Arne; Cranford, Peter J..
Seasonal variation in blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, retention efficiency (RE) responses to natural seston concentrations were investigated in the Lysefjord, Norway. The smallest particles shown to be effectively retained (100%) were approximately 7 μm and this was observed on only one occasion. The most common response was for RE to progressively increase from small to large particles with maximum RE at 30 to 35 μm (8 of 12 experiments). Temporal changes in the seston size distribution towards a dominance of smaller particles coincided with a decrease in the RE maxima to particles between 7 and 15 μm diameter. The RE of 1 μm and 4 μm diameter particles ranged between 14–64% and 12–86%, respectively, showing that small particles occasionally serve as a...

Variation in Size and Growth of the Great Scallop Pecten maximus along a Latitudinal Gradient ArchiMer
Chauvaud, Laurent; Patry, Yann; Jolivet, Aurelie; Cam, Emmanuelle; Le Goff, Clement; Strand, Oivind; Charrier, Gregory; Thebault, Julien; Lazure, Pascal; Gotthard, Karl; Clavier, Jacques.
Understanding the relationship between growth and temperature will aid in the evaluation of thermal stress and threats to ectotherms in the context of anticipated climate changes. Most Pecten maximus scallops living at high latitudes in the northern hemisphere have a larger maximum body size than individuals further south, a common pattern among many ectotherms. We investigated differences in daily shell growth among scallop populations along the Northeast Atlantic coast from Spain to Norway. This study design allowed us to address precisely whether the asymptotic size observed along a latitudinal gradient, mainly defined by a temperature gradient, results from differences in annual or daily growth rates, or a difference in the length of the growing...
